Since WISE is involved in training and development for organizations, one of the areas that we help with is team building. In building or managing an effective team there are many factors that warrant examination. In their book Team Building : Proven Strategies for Improving Team Performance the authors Dyer, Dyer, and Dyer describe key factors determine the success of teams. It’s important to note that these factors are vital to the success of a team regardless of the type of team: whether it’s a corporate software development team, teachers and administrators of a school, corporate lawyers, work teams at a non-profit organization, sales teams, or athletic teams. According to Dyer, Dyer, and Dyer (2013), effective teams have an environment of trust and mutual support among team members. In the context of this trust, the team members work together to establish goals, make decisions, maintain communication about progress and challenges, manage conflict as it arises, and make changes as needed in order to achieve the previously determined goals of the group.
Of course it’s easy to find examples of organizations in which teams or team members are falling short in one or more areas. In developing effective teams one of the other factors that’s important is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each of the team members. So, if you were asked, by a non-judgmental friend or colleague, what your strengths and weakness are, what would you list? (Name at least 5 strengths and 3 weaknesses)
